Neck Pain & Headache Relief in Sacramento
Neck pain and headaches rarely come from just one place.
Tension, stress, poor posture, old injuries, and joint restrictions in the neck can all contribute. With so many potential factors, treating only the neck often leaves the real cause untouched.

"Just My Usual Headache"
In nearly every new patient history, I ask about neck pain and headaches. The answer I hear constantly is some version of, "Oh, just my usual headache" or "just my normal neck pain." Whaaatt?!
It's one of the things that genuinely bothers me about how people experience pain. Neck pain and headaches are among the most debilitating conditions there are. They can knock people out of work, out of sleep, out of their own lives. And yet they're often some of the easiest problems to actually resolve, once properly addressed.
Too many people quietly accept chronic neck pain or recurring headaches as just part of life. In many cases, it doesn't have to be that way!
What Causes Neck Pain & Headaches
Neck pain and headaches can develop for many
different reasons, and they often overlap.
Common contributing factors include:
- Long hours on phones, computers, or driving
("tech neck")
- Stress-related tension in the neck,
shoulders, or jaw
- Old injuries that never fully healed
- Poor sleeping positions
- Joint restrictions in the neck and upper back
- Chronic muscle tightness around the neck
and shoulders
One common pattern is a cervicogenic headache,
meaning a headache that originates from
dysfunction in the neck rather than the head
itself.
Stress can also play a role, both by increasing
muscle tension and, for some people, by
contributing to migraine frequency. Migraines
involve other factors beyond the neck and
should be evaluated individually.
Because these causes often combine, treating
only the area of pain can miss what's actually
driving it.
Why Soft Tissue Work Matters as Much as the Adjustment
When I started practicing, most chiropractors in the area focused almost entirely on moving the bones, the adjustment itself, with the belief that everything else would take care of itself afterward.
I saw it differently. Bones are moved by muscles. If the muscles, tendons, and ligaments around a joint are tight, restricted, or holding tension, the joint often returns to the same restricted pattern, even after a good adjustment.
A common example is the desk worker who spends 8 to 10 hours at a computer, develops forward
head posture and tight chest muscles, and starts getting recurring headaches. The headache may feel like the problem, but often it's the neck and surrounding muscles driving it.
A stiff or chronically tight neck is often caused as much by soft tissue restriction as by the joint itself. Addressing only the bone, in my opinion, can leave the underlying problem untouched, and often makes the adjustment itself more difficult and less comfortable than it needs to be.
This is why I've always worked the soft tissue and the joint together.
"Muscles move the bones. If you only treat the bone, you're only solving half the problem."

Our Approach to Neck Pain & Headache Relief
Care begins with understanding what's actually contributing to your neck pain or headaches, not just where it hurts.
Every patient is evaluated individually. Treatment is based on what we find, not a standard protocol applied to everyone.
Depending on your condition, care may include:
- Chiropractic adjustments to restore joint motion in the neck and upper back
- Soft tissue therapy to release tension in the neck, shoulders, and jaw
- Postural correction strategies for desk work, driving, and daily habits
- Movement-based rehabilitation to improvestability and prevent recurrence
- Guidance on stretches and exercises you can do at home
Cervicogenic headaches, in particular, often respond well to chiropractic adjustments and soft tissue work that address neck mobility and tension.
The goal is not just temporary relief. It is identifying what's driving the problem so you can move better, feel better, and stay that way.
Who This Care Is For
Neck pain and headaches affect people differently depending on their lifestyle and history. This care may be a good fit if you are:
- An athlete dealing with neck tension or stiffness from training
- A busy parent who notices tension building up from carrying kids, car seats, or daily stress
- Someone whose neck pain developed gradually with age, as joints and discs naturally change over time
- Someone with an old injury, including a past sports injury or auto accident, that never fully resolved
- Someone who spends long hours at a desk, on a phone, or driving
If you've been told your neck pain or headaches are "just something you have to live with," that's often not the case. Identifying what's actually contributing to the problem can make a meaningful difference.
Conditions Commonly Associated With Neck Pain
- Cervicogenic headaches
- Tension headaches
- Tech neck
- Whiplash injuries
- Postural strain
- Upper back stiffness
- Shoulder tension
- Jaw tension and TMJ-related discomfort
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my headaches are coming from my neck?
Cervicogenic headaches, meaning headaches that originate from the neck, often come with neck
stiffness, pain that worsens with certain head positions, or tension that radiates from the base of the skull. An evaluation can help determine whether your neck is contributing to your headaches.
Can a chiropractor help with a stiff neck?
Yes. A stiff or chronically tight neck is often caused by a combination of joint restriction and soft tissue tension. As a Sacramento chiropractor who works both the joints and the surrounding muscles, I focus on addressing both pieces rather than just one.
How many visits does it typically take to feel relief?
This varies depending on how long the issue has been present and what's contributing to it. Some patients feel improvement quickly, while chronic neck pain that has built up over years may take
longer to fully resolve.
Do you treat chronic neck pain, or only recent injuries?
Both. Whether your neck pain started recently or has been building for years, the same approach applies: identifying what's actually contributing to the problem and addressing it directly.
Can poor posture really cause headaches?
Absolutely! Forward head posture, often from phone or computer use, places ongoing strain on the neck
and upper back. Over time, this can contribute to both chronic neck pain and recurring headaches.
Do you only do adjustments, or also soft tissue work?
Both, and the approach is always tailored to what works for you. Some patients want a more traditional adjustment, others prefer not to be adjusted at all, and that's completely fine. There are many ways to work with the neck and surrounding tissue, and care is built around what you're comfortable with, not a single method applied to everyone.
Is neck adjusting safe? I've heard it can be scary.
This is one of the most common concerns I hear, and it's completely understandable. Yes, neck adjustments are generally very safe, depending on one's history. Neck adjustments can be performed in different ways, and the approach is always tailored to what's comfortable and appropriate for each patient. For some people, this means a traditional adjustment. For others, gentler techniques or more soft tissue work may be a better fit. There is no one-size-fits-all approach, and
your comfort always factors into the plan.
I have arthritis or degenerative changes in my neck. Can you still help?
Very often, yes! The right approach depends on the individual case. Sometimes the neck still benefits from adjustments, performed in a way that's as comfortable as possible for that patient. In other cases, more soft tissue work, traction, gentle mobilization, or a combination approach is more appropriate. An evaluation helps determine what makes sense for your specific situation.
Can chiropractic care help migraines?
Often yes! Migraines are more complex than tension headaches or headaches that originate from the neck. While some migraine sufferers notice improvement when neck tension and joint restrictions are addressed, every case is different. During your evaluation, we'll discuss your history and whether chiropractic
care may be an appropriate part of your overall approach.
